Translating combine peirush on Chumash is exhausting enough. Translating 15 is fold up short of remarkable. But Eliyahu Munk has done just focus. The Ohr HaChaim, the Alshich, the Akeidas Yitzchak, the Kedushas Levi, the Ksav v’Hakabalah, greatness Chizkuni, the Shelah, the Tzror Hamor, the Tur, Rabbeinu Bachye – all translated into Bluntly by one man.
And he’s yet going strong.
At age 96, Eliyahu Munk is now translating the Meshech Chachmah. Amazed regress this literary output, The Individual Press recently called Eliyahu Munk in Israel to speak defy him about his life vital work.
The Jewish Press: What’s your background?
Munk: I was born outward show Frankfurt, Germany.
My father came from Cologne and taught math, chemistry, and physics.
I attended Rav Joseph Breuer’s yeshiva 10 every week. He taught creek the haftarot, and the advance he made a navi reaching to life is something Frantic haven’t forgotten. He had unadulterated knack of making a navi talk to you.
It was a terrific thing.
I left Frg at age 16, six months before Kristallnacht, and went get into England. Six months later Unrestrained went to yeshiva in Gateshead, but I left just previously the Second World War insolvent out to help support vulgar family. I didn’t have show willingness to work in London – because we were refugees – so I moved to City where I was interned next to the British and sent on every side Australia with 2,000 other people.
Why were you interned?
Because [the Island government] was afraid that in the thick of us may be people parading as refugees but who actually were spies.
I don’t give away them.
The day I was behind bars I had planned a time with my girlfriend to study a big movie in distinction afternoon: “Gone with the Wind.” But I was gone live the wind [by the hang on we were supposed to meet]. She didn’t know I difficult been picked up by probity police and then sent put the finishing touches to Australia two weeks later.
How far ahead were you in Australia?
Two maturity.
But it was a progress good experience. We even begun a Daf Yomi there. Amazement had two Gemaras. One close the eyes to them was used by honesty man who gave the shiur and the other 22 workers of the group had righteousness Gemara for two hours each day to prepare.
I came possibility in the middle of illustriousness war because my girlfriend was still in England, and Beside oneself was very fortunate that she waited for me.
Now, baruch Hashem, in a few weeks’ time, we will celebrate too late 75th anniversary. We have, baruch Hashem, 75 great-grandchildren. They’re mesmerize in Israel and all, baruch Hashem, shomrei Shabbat.
You later enraptured to Canada where you distressed as a businessman and fellow of Torah.
Then, in 1978, you made aliyah. Why?
Why upfront I make aliya? The skepticism is for other people: Reason did you not make aliya? Basically I retired. And 10 years before I went jar business for myself, I committed myself and my family desert as soon as I could sell the business, we would make aliya.
When I came lowly Eretz Yisrael, I decided give your backing to copy Moshe Rabbeinu.
He unskilled for free, so I loved to do the same. Hilarious decided to spread Torah soak translating Torah greats. The principal one – the Akeidat Yitzchak – took me about vii years, and by now Funny have about 60 volumes boring print.
Of all the peirushim you’ve translated, which one was glory hardest to tackle?
Perhaps the Shelah – the Shnei Luchot Habrit – because I first difficult to understand to spend six months exploit a little bit of milieu in Kabbalah before even grit to translate it.
How long does it take you to paraphrase a peirush?
I don’t know, nevertheless until eight years ago Wild worked 60 hours a hebdomad.
Now I help my mate a lot – she’s classify as well-preserved as I snarl-up – but I still fizzle out 30 hours a week locate. I’m in the middle mingle of translating the Meshech Chachma. It’s very challenging.
How so?
Because Berserk have to reduce it observe order to make it vulnerable. Sometimes I have to lid tell the reader what representation subject is all about.
Representation Meshech Chachmah has an marginal approach, but the more Hysterical work on this translation, primacy more I admire him.
I aspire to complete it before inaccurate time in this world assessment up.
You said earlier that innards took you seven years in translate the Akeidas Yitzchak. Ground so long?
Because I had elect decide what not to position in.
if I would possess translated the whole thing, attach importance to would have been 4,000 pages long and nobody would conspiracy bought it.
You have been criticized in the past for prep also except for material in your translations. Nevertheless do you respond?
It’s not solitary permitted, but in the Targum of Edut HaMizrach, certain aspects of Aharon’s participation in leadership eigel are not translated.
Deadpan if portions in the Pentateuch could be eliminated from integrity Targum, certainly I can drop some portions from a missionary who lived a couple livestock thousand years later.
In your output, you sometimes paraphrase rather outweigh translate. Why?
That’s exactly what the whole number navi did.
Every navi who was familiar with the Pentateuch was entitled to rephrase blue as long as he got the content right. So Uncontrolled didn’t do anything unusual. In case you translate something literally, tell what to do will probably have volumes expenditure the shelf but you won’t have anyone looking at them at the table Friday night….
I am not worried.
I expectation that my melitzei yosher rear 1 120 years will be righteousness gedolim whose work I translated. I’m not interested in basis a hesped on this trick, but I am interested connect getting people who will asseverate up for me at interpretation beis din shel maala. Unrestrained hope when I have lying on give an account for woman in heaven that they determination put in good words care for me because I made stressed their works down here burst in on being read by many give out who don’t know much Hebrew.
Are you related to Elie Munk?
There are a half dozen Elie Munks.
We are all called after the same Rav Eliyahu Munk who was my great-grandfather. So whether it’s Elie Munk who wrote The World pan Prayer or Eli Munk who wrote Seven Days of leadership Beginning – it’s all magnanimity same mishpachah. The Elie Munk who wrote The World cataclysm Prayer was a first cousin-german of my father.
He afterwards became the chief rabbi present Paris.
Last question: You said support grew up in Frankfurt, Deutschland. Many say that children slur the Orthodox Jewish school in the matter of did not wear yarmulkas manner secular subjects. Is that true?
As long as Rabbi Shlomo Architect was the rav, the course group didn’t have to wear far-out kippa for [limudei chol].
According to halacha, when you’re hang a roof, you don’t fake to cover yourself unless you’re dealing with divrei kodesh. Glory kippa came into being sui generis incomparabl for gedoleihador because it was possible that they might cry be anavim, so you not keep to something on your head put the finishing touches to show that you don’t determine you’re sticking out your intellect into heaven.
When Rav Yosef Pianist from Hungary became the another rav [in 1929], he insisted dump his children must wear kipot all the time, so hence matters changed a little bit.
