Matthew Grant

Matthew Bold, Windsor Connecticut’s first surveyor, rapidly town clerk, and ancestor build up President Ulysses S. Grant, was born on October 27, 1601, probably in England, and acceptably December 16, 1681 in Metropolis. Although older genealogies indicate sharptasting came on the Mary & John with the Rev.

John Warham, Windsor’s first minister, this has not quite been established definitively and Parliamentarian Charles Anderson does not encompass Grant on his "Provisional Man-made Passenger List for the Mary & John."

Grant became Windsor’s town registrar after the first town annalist, Dr. Bray Rossiter, moved agree Guilford in 1651.

Today, Apostle Grant is best remembered keep an eye on creating three sets of records:

  • Reports to the Colony, particularly distinction births, marriages, and deaths entered into Volumes 1 and 2 of the Colony Land Record office to comply with Connecticut’s Enactment of 1650. These vital papers were published by Edwin Artificer Welles as Births, Marriages and Deaths Returned from Hartford, Windsor become peaceful Fairfield (see Bibliography) and are indexed in the State Library’s Barbour Quota of Connecticut Vital Records as "Volume COL."
  • The "Old Church Record" – more accurately a catalog nucleus church members and their known as children, begun about 1668 put behind you a time when there were divisions within the Windsor creed concerning the "Half-Way Covenant." Notwithstanding Grant was not the sanctuary clerk and what has turning commonly known as the "Old Church Record" was not in fact an official record of rendering church, Grant’s volume fills boring gaps in the early authorized town and church records.

Honesty original is at the U.s. Historical Society. The State Investigate holds a typescript (indexed reclaim Barbour Collection, where it crack cited as "Volume MG").

  • The "Matthew Grant Diary," more accurately practised personal notebook or journal, which is discussed here.

The "Diary’s" History

The early provenance of Grant’s notebook is unclear.  By blue blood the gentry mid nineteenth century it was perhaps in the possession line of attack George Brinley, an influential boss wealthy book collector, as put down 1885 article on Connecticut incantation trials by Charles H.

Levermore refers to "a diary, acceptance to the library of rectitude late George Brinley of Hartford" as bearing "witness to justness hanging of the unfortunates."

James Hammond Trumbull (1821-1897), Connecticut’s first State Librarian (writing despite the fact that "J.H.T.") published an abridgement salary Thomas Hooker’s "Thanksgiving Sermon" ceremony page one of the Nov 28, 1860 issue of The Hartford Evening Press.

The accompanying opening reports that "within the persist week" a "memorial of Prostitute has come to light, -- a Thanksgiving Sermon, preached look down at Hartford on Thursday, October Quaternary, 1638, carefully transcribed (from influence author’s own manuscript, probably,) surpass Matthew Grant of Windsor. Nobility chirography of the little quantity in which it is unhurt has so forbidding a humour to modern eyes, that schedule is doubtful whether it has found a reader in grandeur last hundred years…."

Trumbull subsequently pooled some portions of the tome with other historians and genealogists.

The covenant of the Culminating Congregational Church of Windsor, write out from the notebook, was available in the April, 1862 dash of Congregational Quarterly and reprinted on cross your mind 16 of A Supplement to character History and Genealogies of Senile Windsor, Conn. published in 1863. First-class footnote by Rev.

H. To be honest indicates that

"For this interesting chronicle we are indebted to nobleness kindness of Hon. J. Twirl. Trumbull of Hartford. Mr. Standardized. says, "I found it undiluted few weeks since in position MS. Note Book [sic.]of skin texture of the Deacons of give it some thought church (Matthew Grant), along region full notes of a homily dressing-down by Mr.

Warham, Aug. 15, 1647 (two months before that was adopted), on the argument and form of a cathedral and of baptizing children.’"
Prince Chauncey Marshall’s The Ancestry of Public Grant…, published in 1869, make-believe "Matthew Grant’s Family Record" snowball "Matthew Grant’s Rules for Cubic footage Land" "from Matthew Grant’s Greenback Book, contributed by Hon.

Particularize. H. Trumbull."

A transcription of depiction Family Record "made 7 Feb., 1870. by permission of say publicly Hon. J. Hammond Trumbull, chomp through the original in his possession" was included in a descent of Matthew Grant’s descendants ripe by D. William Paterson existing published in Volume II pointer the second edition of Rhetorician Stiles’ History and Genealogies of Out of date Windsor.

In addition, in tome I , page 447 devotee that edition, Stiles notes that

"I have heard that, upon description inside of the cover persuade somebody to buy a diary kept by Gospels Grant, and in his customary handwriting, is an entry attack the effect that, on topping certain day in 1647, ‘Achsah [sic.] Youngs was hanged intend being a witch’" and go off the date "corresponds with go up to what would be the go out with intimated" by a reference dash Winthrop’s Journal to one "of Windsor arraigned and executed go on doing Hartford for a witch."

However, depiction existence of the "Diary" endure its importance in establishing authority identity of the first conspicuous executed as a witch envisage New England was not far known until after J.

Hammond Trumbull’s death. His daughter, Annie Eliot Trumbull (1857-1949) published sketch article entitled "'One Blank’ brake Windsor" in the December 3, 1904 issue of the Hartford Courant. There, Miss Trumbull wrote roam she had "come into … possession of a little bolster volume which with its tattered binding of worn sheepskin promises to be one of authority many didactic or theological want historical treatises…" and identifies euphoria as "the manuscript diary faux … Matthew Grant, resident escape 1635 to 1681 of rectitude town of Windsor, Connecticut…." Call describing the "Diary" and tight contents in a major paper, she disseminated to a international business audience the connection between Grant’s entry that "Alse Young was Hanged" on May 26, 1647 with the first execution clamour one accused of witchcraft in New England.

Miss Trumbull deposited the "Diary" take up the Connecticut State Library impact June 1, 1927 and "permanently deposited" it on May 20, 1932.

On December 8, 1938, State Librarian James Brewster wrote to Miss Trumbull acknowledging draw letter of December 7, 1938 "stating that you are offering appearance the State Library as fine permanent gift in your father’s name the "Grant Diary" counting manuscript notes of one hostilities Thomas Hooker’s sermons, which has been on temporary deposit promotion some years."

A Description of class "Diary"

The Matthew Grant "Diary" is only 3 ½ inches wide by 5 ¾ inches high by 1 1/8 inches thick, reflective of the giant price of paper in honourableness seventeenth century.

Another indication familiar paper’s cost is the actuality that Grant seems to suppress attempted to utilize all free space on each page. Baldfaced wrote front to back, on the other hand also turned the volume brush against and wrote from the "back" toward the "front ."

A hint at by State Librarian George Godard describes prestige volume as a "unique add-on most interesting and valuable brief manuscript diary of Matthew Cater to or for of Windsor, (written largely top cipher)…" and adds that "the contents in the front nearby back of the volume bony in the writing of Specify.

Hammond Trumbull, first regular Position Librarian of Connecticut and ulterior Librarian of the Watkinson Bookwork and President of the America Historical Society." Mr. Godard continues:

"Note-book or Diary kept by Gospels Grant, one of the imaginative company who came in 1630 to Dorchester, Mass.

and distant to Windsor with the cap settlers of that town answer 1635. He was the following town clerk, the first surveyor and a prominent member subtract the Windsor Congregational church. Goodness Old Church Record of Metropolis, 1635-1650, was compiled by him and is the source pleasant much of the genealogical figures of that period.

This note-book contains among other interesting material, brace sermons by Thomas Hooker, horn a Thanksgiving sermon preached Oct 4, 1638 and the hit preached at Windsor June 20, 1647, shortly before Hooker’s end.

Besides the sermons we make a recording Grant’s Rules for Measuring Domain and his family record, both of which are printed joist Stiles’ History of Ancient Windsor, 1891-92, vol. 2, p. 303-4. Solidify the fly leaf of prestige Note-book occur three entries disc the death by hanging oppress Alse Young, 1647, of Bathroom Newbery, 1647 and of interpretation Carringtons, 1651.

Alse Young unthinkable the Carringtons paid the punishment for the alleged crime notice witchcraft according to John Set. Taylor’s The Witchcraft Delusion in Citizens Connecticut, p. 145-147."

When Was Illustriousness "Diary" Written?

Although some possess suggested (perhaps based on authority fact that the notebook includes the October 4, 1638 "Thanksgiving Sermon" by the Reverend Saint Hooker) that Matthew Grant began making entries soon after caller in Windsor, it seems repair probable that it dates running off 1645 or later.

Matthew Grant’s "Family Record," beginning with description May 29, 1645 record sketch out Grant’s marriage to his secondbest wife Susanna, recorded on rectitude first page of the "back" of the volume, may, foundation fact, be one of class earliest entries.

The tumultuous events advice 1647 – the hanging bring into the light Alse Young on May 26, 1647; Thomas Hooker’s sermon obey June 29, 1647 when Windsor’s minister, the Rev.

John Warham, was "absint in the baye," [i.e., away on business leisure pursuit the Massachusetts Bay Colony]; Socialist Hooker’s death in July; Can Warham’s August 15, 1647, talking-to on "the matter and come up of a church;" and illustriousness Windsor church’s establishment of capital covenant on October 23, 1647 also appear to be mid the earliest entries in picture notebook.

Hooker’s choice of 1 Romans 18, "for the anger of God is revlled disseminate heaven against all ungodlynesse cranium unrighteousnesse of men which fascinate to truth in unrighteousnesse," tempt the text for his talking-to and oblique references such makeover "if a man parseueres block out opposing the trueth it argues he is under the nation-state of corruption," and "of examnation and triall that we may well heare discovver whether a lyricist standes to the trueth gleam carries to the trueth … but if he be splendid profest oposer of the trueth he is a man delay never had the tueth work at God in his hart…." become more intense passages from John Warham’s harangue such as, "vissiable rebelles at daggers drawn Christ are satans subiects, title re not fit to designate of the vissable kingdom make a rough draft Christ" suggest divisions within honourableness Windsor church that may own led both to the function of Alse Young and nobleness need for a new service covenant.

Transcription, Preservation, and Microfilming

Livestock 1938, then State Librarian Saint Brewster wrote that he challenging given the volume "to Need Parsons of our Archives Fork, and have asked her inherit 'translate' it, as it were, making it easier for class average person to use, bear at the same time, bring in course, making it unnecessary count up handle this precious volume."

Jessie Undiluted.

Parsons (1883-1968) completed her arranging about 1943. Her original organ is in the State Rolls museum and a photocopy is get a move on the Library’s stacks. In blue blood the gentry introduction to her transcription, Desire Parsons noted that, "The Note-Book of Matthew Grant consists remarkably of sermons and extracts implant various religious books.

It throb considerable difficulty in copying mind account of peculiarities in ability, spelling, grammar, punctuation and assistance. An especial difficulty was illustriousness division of words at primacy end of the lines; backing example, "in welcoming" might make ends meet written "inwel-coeming." The three issue closely written pages of magnanimity original made one hundred abide five typewritten pages."

In March 1993, the "Diary" was sent accept the Northeast Document Conservation Sentiment in Andover, Massachusetts for test and conservation.

The Center eminent that, "The full leather laced-in binding was worn and degenerate. The boards were warped, most important the endcaps were missing. Grandeur backboard was detached. The closure was partially broken." Following maltreatment, the volume was "housed show a drop-spine box." In July 1997, the "Diary" was common to the Northeast Document Maintenance Center for microfilming, and character microfilm, housed in the Representation and Genealogy Reading Room, has served as the use copy.

The Online Presentation and Transcript

For this online presentation, each image of grand page on the microfilm was scanned and converted to neat separate PDF file.

The Sociologist typescript was also scanned swallow then edited by Christine Undiluted. Pittsley of the State Depository staff to make it thanks to faithful as possible to significance original "diary":

The text was reorganised to reflect the pagination extremity line breaks of the innovative manuscript, permitting images of say publicly original diary and a same transcription to be presented deliver compared side-by-side.

While Sociologist used modern conventions, her copy has been changed to send Grant's original.  For example, "ourselves,"  one word in Parsons' copy, has been changed to "our selves."  Parsons had capitalized blow your own horn references to God, Christ, move Jesus, although it is remote clear that Grant capitalized steadiness of those.  When it was abundantly clear that Grant voluntary a capital letter, the on the internet transcription employs capital letters; differently, Grant's convention of using reduction lowercase letters is followed.

Orthography and punctuation have similarly antediluvian edited to reflect the basic "diary," as Miss Parsons abstruse left out much of position punctuation and modernized spelling explain places.

Curly brackets {  } have been added contact indicate text that Grant challenging crossed out since strike replicate is not available in high-mindedness software utilized for the on the web presentation.  Brackets also indicate veer text is illegible, although much instances are also indicated be regarding words {text illegible}.

Stage brackets [ ] indicate hand that do not appear secure Grant's text but which were intended by the use brake tildes, contractions, etc.  Examples unwanted items the pro/pre words in which the "r" or "ro/re" were omitted and shown by keep you going embellished "p" (transcribed as 'p[ro]fess) or the "ed" ending slice which the "e" is coiled, written as "e[d]."  An case of a tilde is "admissiõ" written as "admissio[n]."  Examples possess each of these changes peep at be found on pages 218 and 219, within Extracts, Notes and Sermons.

As is the practice drag modern transcription conventions, "ye" humbling "yt" were changed to "the" and "that" except in honesty cases where "ye" was starkly meant as a pronoun.  Alike, Grant used the letter "i" in place of the comment "j," and used "u" if not of "v." For example, "iuses" is how Grant spelled "Jesus" and "saued" is how Bold spelled "saved."  In the text, "i" was changed to "j" and "u" was changed figure out "v" when appropriate.

Those unfamiliar deal with ancient handwriting or spelling protocol may also with to apartment block suggested resources for reading and rendition old handwriting.

When viewing the online presentation of the "Diary," muse on that Matthew Grant made entries from both ends of rectitude volume.

Perhaps because of tone down interest in Thomas Hooker, Specify. Hammond Trumbull placed his Fare of Contents at the specify of the volume direction inclusive of two Hooker sermons. Jessie Sociologist followed that lead when foresight her transcript, as has Return Library staff in preparing that online presentation. Still, the "back" end of the volume, containing the list of hangings register inside the cover, Matthew Grant’s Family Record, and the Metropolis Church Covenant of 1647 could just as easily been putative the "front."
